Kindling Book 1 Pages 86-87

Writer Comment: Winters in Kindling are brutal, and families throughout the San Luis Valley endure them in isolation. The weeks following the first thaw are often filled with bitter news, as people learn of the deaths of neighbors and distant loved ones. This mourning period concludes with the coming of the Spring Market.

The Spring Market Dance is sort of a collective sigh of relief breathed by the valley’s inhabitants. People eat and drink to excess and generally revel in being alive.

It’s a pretty good time.

By the way, the moon in the background isn’t a waxing gibbous on a whim. I know the exact year and date that Kindling takes place in the future. You’ll have to wait for a astronomical event like a meteor shower or an eclipse before you can begin to extrapolate it for yourself, however. WHICH I KNOW YOU ARE ALL EAGER TO DO.

Terok Nor’s tomatoes and peppers are doing well. Two of the tomatoes shot right up and are totally throwing off the balance of this grow light.

In the process of hardening the two bigger ones off. We got two big containers and two cages so we can put them on the deck. The smaller of the two big tomato plants is a striped stuffer tomato, the taller is a basic organic tomato.

The rest will hopefully fit in the 4’ x 8’ raised bed we made in the front yard. We’re going to plant as much as we can in there, and if there isn’t enough space, we’ll container some of the mystery hot peppers.

Our four fruiting trees were delivered unexpectedly yesterday, so Bob and I ran to Hampton Nursery and picked up 30 bags of soil.

First Row: Hardy Chicago Fig with ONE FIG still attached. It’s so cute seeing this tiny tree with one fig on it. Since it’s already there, we’re going to let it ripen and eat it when it’s ready. Unless the squirrels/birds get to it first.

So, a few nights ago my 10 year old Galah, Bibi, broke a blood feather. We took her to the vet, which ended up costing over $500. We will have to board her for 2 weeks in june, which will cost an extra $531. This is expensive, but I should be able to cover it. However, the blood tests came back, and Bibi has a VERY bad blood infection, and signs that her liver may have problems. We are waiting for the results of another test, and I will now have to order a liver analysis. I also have to medicate her twice a day. All of this is very expensive, and I am terrified that she will not get better and die. I’m very scared of going into debt if her health does not get better—-I can barely cover these expenses as it is. Bibi is my baby; I rescued her 7 years ago from a sketchy, neglectful situation. Normally she should live for another 50 years! So, I am asking my community for help. I have updated my etsy shop with tons of new prints in a range of prices. Terok Nor Horticulture Division Update

All the plants that have begun to blossom in our yard. These just.. showed up - we didn’t plant any of these. They just sprung up on their own! I’m not sure what any of these plants are, but they’re so pretty! <3

The last photo is a little shrine Bob made out of bricks. He lights incense every so often as an offering to whatever spirits are in our area (something like that- I don’t question it XD)

I didn’t take pictures of the front yard, but it’s completely full of those little purple fluffy flowers like the ones in the shrine photo. A sea of them in our front yard. They’re probably 5” tall now. XD I’m sure our neighbors don’t take too kindly to our meadow, but they can DEAL :P

We purchased 4 fruiting trees to plant on the property: Winter Double Pink Flowering Ume Apricot (front yard), Wase Fuyu Oriental Persimmon, Hardy Chicago Fig, and Hosui Asian Pear(back yard).
