An incredible experience I was very glad to share with you! <3
v v v v v Love all of this! v v v v v
Erik and I attended Slutwalk yesterday and had such a fantastic time! I marched near the front, and when we reached the capital I discovered gotopless.org. They told me it was legal in DC for women to go about topless, and even offered to escort me around the area if I didn’t feel safe going topless by myself. I felt safe enough with Erik though, so I peeled my nasty tank and corset off and spent the rest of the day in DC topless. Thank you to all the speakers who came out and shared their stories! I signed up for a donation account to Planned Parenthood before we decided to walk back to the metro.
The closest thing I got to harassment I got was this tourist mom who practically knocked over her son in an effort to shield his eyes, and shouted at me “THAT’S INAPPROPRIATE!” But I didn’t actually hear her, Erik did—-he was pretty upset about that, and thinks her son will probably grow up to hate women or something. Maybe?
DC police did not bat an eye, which is better than the NYPD on this issue. I made a few teenage boys visibly blush when I held their gaze. Walking around topless has been a long-time dream of mine; I get so god damn angry when I see shirtless guys enjoying what I can’t have. :P And it was amazing! I loved the feeling of the sun and the breeze, I loved not having to feel my shirt sticking to my back or my sweat collecting under my breasts.
Half way to the metro there was a Korean woman handing out pamphlets. I took one and then realized it was a moonie-hellfire tract. I said outloud “what the hell am I supposed to do with this?” and the woman in front of me turned around and started laughing—-I realized she was the ASL interpreter from Slutwalk and she’d gotten the same tract I had.
“This is so much funnier because you’re topless. Thanks, I have to do my standup routine tomorrow, and I think I just got some new material.”
Just before we went down to the metro, I stopped to re-pin my bun. A man came up to us, clearly really excited to have spotted me, and asked me in a thick italian accent if he could take my picture. I said yes, and then he motioned to his family to come join him—-they all seemed really charmed and happy to get to take my picture.
Anyways, had a great time, got really sunburnt, met up with old friends and I hope any fellow slutwalkers on Tumblr will follow me back! We headed home after grabbing dinner at Matchstick (where Erik and I discussed the finer points of rape culture), and spent the evening watching The Wire and eating ice-cream.
More pics of SlutWalk DC 2012 under the cut! Also be sure to attend Gotoppless rally on the 26th in front of the White House to legalize female-toplessness nationwide!
